An exclusive suburb with a family-friendly community and affluent nature
Westmount is a quiet and calm residential haven tucked away from the hustle and bustle in southwest Montreal. With excellent schools and a number of public amenities, such as the community pool, recreation centre, and public library, Westmount is a great place to raise a family. The city is home to large, beautiful houses with green, manicured lawns, as well as glass high-rise apartments. The sprawling green parks leave residents connected to both the community and their surroundings. Although still traditional, the community has come a long way from its 17th-century beginnings. The city faces the southern peak of Mount Royal with several small commercial districts on Sherbrooke Street, Victoria Avenue, and Greene Avenue in downtown Westmount. With all of its natural offerings, as well as its access to recreation and retail, Westmount is a wonderful place to live.
The city is home to mostly wealthy and predominantly anglophone people. It’s a wonderful place to live because of its friendly community, values, and lifestyle. Mostly residential, Westmount homes increase in size and value towards the top of the mountain, the biggest and most expensive properties near or on Summit Circle. A great place to commute from, the Atwater metro station is just a hop, skip, and a jump away when you live in the area. Residents enjoy unbeatable proximity to green spaces, shopping, delicious dining, and an active outdoor scene.
There are quite a few neighborly restaurants and shops throughout and near Westmount. For a swanky dinner or romantic evening, have a meal at the Taverne Sur Le Square, a buzzing eatery with fresh, fixed-price French courses, and an extensive wine list that is privately imported to the restaurant. Café Gentile is a bright, airy dining venue with impeccable style, boasting delicious panini, salads, coffee, and other Italian eats. Another wonderful yet casual place to sit down is Petros Restaurant, a Greek, Aegean-inspired tavern that offers traditional dishes surrounded by truly classic blue and white decor. IMADAKE IZAKAYA is rated highly for turning out Japanese tapas-sized sustainable dishes, as well as ramen and great sake.
Because of its many green spaces, Westmount is home to many relaxing and rejuvenating outdoor spaces. Westmount Park is an unbelievably beautiful stretch of land with grassy areas, an extensive playground, footpaths, ponds and wading pools, and tennis courts. There are large playing fields on the east and south sides, as well as the Westmount Recreation Centre and adjacent swimming pool on the southwest corner. The building is home to two full-size underground NHL-sized ice rinks. The central area contains the gorgeous Westmount Public Library, which was built all the way back in 1897. Victoria Hall is also an exciting place to visit. The reconstructed community centre provides space for municipal courses, concerts, meetings, and social events. There are City Council events, cultural presentations, and recreation courses for all ages that take place here, including tai chi, fitness, music, dance, theatre, and much more. The building also contains a gallery where you can stop and see many different forms of art!
Westmount has several highly rated schools and educational facilities of note, including St George’s Independent School — which has an elementary and high school campus — as well as public anglophone Dawson College and private anglophone Marianopolis College. English-language public schools in Westmount are operated by the English Montreal School Board (EMSB).
